Welcome to Gap Year Thailand

We are the specialists in volunteer gap year programmes helping teach English in schools and universities in Thailand.

We are a not-for-profit organisation.

Learning and improving English - particularly spoken English - is the highest priority of requests for assistance from Thai schools and universities. We organise and support placements for volunteers as teaching assistants for English language. Placements can be from a few weeks to several months.

If you can offer something additional such as sports or music or art or drama that would be particularly welcomed by some schools.

Gap Year Thailand
Are you taking a gap after school?

This is the most popular time to take a gap year – before the weight of student debt after university.

Universities and employers value the skills which you will develop during your programme - transferable skills such as team working, helping others, planning, using initiative, adapting to a new environment and so on; and that you have done something different and useful, not just backpacking. And you'll notice yourself becoming more confident, independent and self-reliant - all valuable qualities at university or in employment. As the website of Queens' College Cambridge says: "We think that time away from study between school and university offers students the chance to develop, mature and see something of the world."

You may be interested in a placement in a primary school, or a secondary school, or an "all age" school (primary plus secondary; or primary plus lower secondary)

We usually suggest a homestay family, but some schools do have teachers’ houses, which may be available if you’d like a bit more independence.

Are you taking a gap after university?

A valuable opportunity before settling down into work.

Employers value the skills which you will develop during your programme - people skills, team working, planning, adapting to a new environment, coping with the unexpected, and so on, So, in terms of employability, you'll stand out against others you are competing against for employment, including those for whom a gap year has been only backpacking.

You may be interested in a placement in a primary school, or a secondary school, or an "all age" school (primary plus secondary; or primary plus lower secondary)

Alternatively, you may be interested in a placement in a university. Again, that would be assisting in teaching English, particularly conversational English. People who are employed in the universities would normally be a bit older, of course, but for volunteer assistants in conversational English the universities are happy to welcome recent graduates. You may like the idea of being with people of a similar age to yourself. And probably making friends with some people who you’ll stay in touch with for a long time. Also, making use of the university’s sports and other facilities may appeal.

Accommodation with a homestay family may be possible, and a good way to get to know a different culture in depth. Alternatively, accommodation for a university placement would usually be in university accommodation. Also, some schools have teachers’ houses, which give rather more independence.

Are you taking a career break?

Maybe just a break for a while, a breathing space, a chance to recharge your batteries, and the opportunity to reflect on future career paths, or maybe the chance to change career track. Maybe you are thinking of taking unpaid leave of absence, or perhaps you have left employment or are thinking of doing so.

A number of people who are interested in the possibility of going into teaching like the idea of a career break doing some teaching, to "test drive" that possibility. If you decide subsequently to go into teaching, your experience in Thailand will be a useful one; if you decide not to, your experience will still be a valuable one it is own right.

But many people are simply interested in doing something different for a while. Fine.
